 Who's fall turkey hunting?
« Thread Started on Sept 11, 2006, 1:30pm »

Been a while since I went fall turkey hunting, love the spring hunting, but get so tied up in deer bow hunting I've gotten away from the fall turkey hunting. Plan on taking a weekend of bow hunting off and pursuing the elusive wild turkey again. Who else fall turkey hunts and what does the population look like in your area this year?

I will hunt turkey a few days. Normally will bow hunt in the morning, get my shotgun and turkey hunt midday and then back out with the bow in the evening. I have scheduled the 23-25 October off to do some combo hunting. Turkey population looks pretty good in Preston County this fall, have been seeing several birds.

I 'll be out for hopefully only a half a day and I'll have one, but it doesn't always work out that easy. It usually takes less than an hour or two but I have had a few long days before. Last year took about an hour in a steady moderate rain which wasn't real fun. But I got a bird and went home and ate it. There are birds everywhere up here. You just start walking and within an hour you should jump some, shoot and go home.

The Gobbler Guillotine website has a new video. Its 20 minutes but has some fantastic "Lop there heads off" action. Check it out.

I think I'll try these next spring. Has anyone else used them?

I usually fall hunt in Mason, Putnam, or Jackson. But none of these counties have a fall season this fall. I thought for sure Mason would have a fall season they lead the state in spring kills.

Guess I'll just pop 2 next spring! Good luck to all the rest of ya'll!

I'll be bow-hunting, I've strayed quite a bit from Fall Turkey hunting. I used to get into it hot and heavy, was all I did during the Fall. Then I got into bow-hunting and it pretty much phased out. Man, I sure do have some great memories with my Father and a few others that were made in the Fall Turkey woods. Good luck to all of you fellas who head out, be safe.

I can't imagine why we don't have a fall season in Mon county. We're covered up in birds.

Well, I got out turkey hunting monday and tuesday but found out that they had logged the WMA during the summer. It turned the only good woods left into a tree top riddled mess. We did see 4 birds monday but not a single one tuesday. I used to go in there and come out with a bird in less than an hour. This year I spent 6 hours in there and nothing. We only have a one week season here so that is the end of my fall turkey season. This is only the second time in 10-12 years that we have had a fall season that I didn't get a bird. My hidden trails that I cut through the brush the last couple years have been turned into logging roads for everyone to use now. The one good thing that came of it though was we saw two decent bucks on monday. The second buck was really neat because we were walking on this logging road and there were scrapes all over it. And they were fresh and they kept getting fresher the further we walked. Then all of a sudden a nice buck popped out in front of us a ran right down the logging road in front of us. It was probably between 3-4 in the afternoon and he had just layed down or freshened 12-15 scrapes over about 200 yards. Whenever I stop hunting in Ohio I may just give this place a try for deer. We have taken a few in muzzleloader but never gun or bowhunted there.

Looks like you may of found a good spot to hunt. Hate that the area got timbered, but just think a few years and that just might turn into deer central.

I am in the same boat as a few others here, no fall season close to me. I used to fall hunt most every year but haven't for few years now except for a trip to Cornstalk a couple years ago when the season was in there.
I don't really miss it much because I would rather hunt during the spring anytime.
